a period of great splendor and expansion from 370 BC onward, a time in which the existing buildings were enlarged and embellished and new ones were erected. At the center of the sacred area stood the temple of Asclepius, surrounded on all sides by \b \cf4 \ATXht1107 Doric\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 \b \cf1 \ATXht3 columns\b0 \cf0 \ATXht0 and containing a chryselephantine statue of the god. Adjacent to the temple, on the north side, there was a long portico where sick people waiting patiently for divine interventi
on used to sleep. In fact it was believed that the god came to them at night, while they were sleeping, to cure or enlighten them.\par
